Beauty Through Floral Design and Gardening

The Lakeside Garden Guild meets monthly to learn about elements of floral design and gardening, and organizes and presents a floral design show for the purpose of fundraising for an annual community project.

About the Guild

Established in 1969, The Lakeside Garden Guild was organized by 14 women to learn about plants. The various topics include many aspects of gardening along with the design and preparation of flowers for arrangements.

Annual Floral Design Show

Lakeside Garden Guild’s 2024 Floral Art and Design Show was a smashing success! The floral extravaganza was an event to remember! The show was held on Saturday, November 16, 2024 from 3 - 6 pm at Privada Revolución #1 in Upper Ajijic. Once again the Guild sold some of the arrangements to the public and Efren Gonzalez painted another memorable work of art that was auctioned at the Show. All of the proceeds from this event will go to the Garden Guild’s annual community project. Many thanks to Connie Hayes for photographing the show.

Community Involvement

Our passionate Guild has turned our shared love of flowers and nature into a powerful force for community improvement. Using the proceeds from our annual flower show—a beloved local event—we have funded a wide array of meaningful community projects over the years. Our efforts have beautified and revitalized public spaces, supported education, and strengthened community pride. Our goal is to uplift and care for the community through our annual projects.

One of our ongoing efforts is a highly praised graffiti removal campaign in the town of Ajijic. With brushes, paint, and dedication in hand, volunteers regularly repaint walls, clean up defaced surfaces, and restore the town’s colorful charm. This project not only improves the visual appeal of the area but also encourages civic responsibility and discourages vandalism.

Ongoing Community Project: Graffiti Removal in Ajijic

In 2009, for its Community Project, Guild members began a program to eliminate on-going graffiti vandalism in Ajijic. The effort was started by several Guild members and the project received a donation of $62,000 pesos during 2009-2010. Countless community residents including local real estate companies participated. Many Garden Guild members (and their husbands) went out in teams to "wipe out" all of the initial graffiti on street after street. Then, in the months to follow they continued to remove graffiti as soon as it appeared, as they kept paint and brushes in their cars. The "wipe out graffiti" effort has continued to this day.

2024 Community Project

For 2024, the Garden Guild voted to donate the sum of $38,000 pesos for the purchase of computers for a state public elementary school, Saul Rodiles Pina. Board president Bonnie Newman was able to secure the purchase of 10 desktop computers that were delivered to the school in the fall.
